WEBELOS DEN #1 2008-09 year activities
SEPT: In Sept a group of Webelos went to Schiff Scout Reservation with the help of boy scouts. They pitched tents, camped, learned how to make hobo stoves and cooked their own food, crossed the Monkey Bridge, made campfires and of course roasted marshmallows etc. A great time was had by all....anyone with pics send them to Val so we can put them up on the site.
At the Sept Den meeting the boys started on their athlete badges and are going to start working at home on their citizenship badges.
OCT: Webelos from Den 1 and Den 2 attended Tanglewood Preserve working on achievements under both the Naturalist and Forester badges.
Octobers den meeting the boys will continue on their athlete achievements and will start working at home on their fitness badge. The boys are working on getting their Webelos badge by December.
NOV: Webelos Den 1 invited Mr. Scannell to attend our meeting as we complete our citzenship requirements. We opened our den meeting to Den II, and the Webelos from Oceanside and St. Chris. The meeting was held on 11/17 and was well attended. Mr. Scannell is a lifelong Baldwin resident and an Eagle Scout! Each cub rec'd a certificate from Nassau County Legislature and each leader rec'd a citation from the County.
DEC Our boys designed, cut and sanded their Pinewood Derby cars Now the boys will be taking them home to start painting and designing their cars.
JAN Our boys put together beautiful wooden pinewood derby holders for the cars which they took home to paint and brought back at Pinewood Derby as a donation to the Pack. A big BULLY to Alan Balabanick who not only precut the wood and bundled each pack for the scouts to assembly but completely paid for all the materials as a donation to our Pack. The boys did a fantastic job and these will last for MANY years to come.
FEB Our boys continued on projects in quest of the craftsman achievement. We made a clay sculpture, did wood burning design on picture frames and made key chains with metallic beads. The boys had a lot of fun and will be receiving their pin at the next pack night.
MARCH We worked on engineer patch in March and visited an actual construction site. THe boys learned how to read blueprints, learned about electricity, property lines, drawing a blueprint of their own home....a big thanks to Alan for arranging our visit
APRIL we are working on our handyman pin and visited Alex's fathers gas station. A big bully to Gus who gave the boys all their own tire pressure gauges and taught the boys how to use a hydraulic jack, a four iron, changed a flat, checked oil, saw how to repair a flat, learned how to use their gauges etc.

In both program, boys first earn a belt loop. Then by taking additional steps can earn the pins.

OCT The boys did a great job with a Spongbob skit at our Pack night with terrific masks and costumes.
NOV The Bears made a fabulous tree craft in November which the boys are still working on by adding more "leaves" great job
The Wolves prepared a terrific closing song for our October Pack night...Look out American Idol here we come. Great job.
Our Tiger Den is running and they are now meeting regularly. We are very proud of our Tigers and they are working very hard. TIGERAMA is coming up....keep it up Tigers !
Tigers have been very busy with a recent trip to the historic firehouse in Baldwin !
2009 September opened with a sleep over at the Scout House. After our opening ceremony, the boys made catapults, played games, had pizza, watched a movie.
2009 During October the boys completed their Travelers badge and are gearing up for crossing over in Feb.
2009 November....the boys enjoyed Pioneering Day hosted by Mike Savages troop. We also went to the aquatic center at Eisenhower and completed the Aquanaut badge. Great swimming guys......
2009 December...the boys worked on their Pinewood Derby cars which is a little bittersweet as this will be the fifth grade boys last Derby as they prepare for crossing over to boy scouts.

Sept Pack Night was games, games games.
Oct Pack Night featured an educational theme with LIVE animals celebrating our Jungle Theme.
Nov Pack night was A night at the Movies where the boys enjoyed the movie UP and took home Thanksgiving trees filled with the leaves of what they are most thankful for.
2008 SPECIAL PACK EVENTS
In the Fall of 2008 our Webelos I were invited to join a boy scout troop at Schiff Scout Reservation. Quite a few boys went and made Hobo stoves, campfires, monkey bridge etc. All that went said that they had a fantastic time.
Dec 2008: December we had 2 Pack events a sleepover at the Cradle of Aviation attended by approximately 10 scouts. They flew airplanes, had a scavenger hunt and slept in their favorite spot in the museum.
The Tree Lighting ceremony held by the Chamber of Commerce was opened traditionally....with Pack 179 leading the pledge of allegiance. During Nov pack night all the boys made ornaments and they were all placed on the Tree during the ceremony. The boys (& parents) braved the chilly temps with some hot cocoa, donuts, reindeer rides while listening to live music. Oh Yes and Lucky the Duck from KJOY came in his Santa suit...I think we are still thawing out...

JUNE BBQ 2009 Our closing event of the scout year was tons of fun and yes we had to dodge raindrops once again...but a fun time had by all. Safe summer y'all see you in September.
